What is a MOOC?

A MOOC is a Massive Open Online Course.

  • Massive: Designed for a large number of participants
  • Open: Open to all people, for free
  • Online: Completed on the internet
  • Course: a course of study involving activities and tasks and discussions among students

Dave Cormier was the first person to use the term 'MOOC', watch his 4-minute video explaining what a MOOC is.

So, MOOCs are short web-based courses. They are free and anyone with a computer can easily access them. MOOCs help students to engage in a topic in different ways. They can watch videos, read articles, and examine media pieces suggested by the MOOC leaders. They can get involved in discussion boards and share resources. They can develop new online resources and participate in learning activities.
